• Dermatologists at U –M with no ties to the cosmetic industry, funded by the National Institutes of Health, found very few things actually work to repair aging skin. (published in the Archives of Dermatology Vol. 144 (No. 5), May 2008.)

• Fortunately, they did find what it is that will help rebuild our skin if it has dark spots, deep grooves, acne, sagging skin and wrinkles.

But most ingredients, they found to only work if injected under the skin, and even most laser treatments don’t work all that well:

Ingredients in Anti Wrinkle Skin Cream Cream that Work:

1.      retinoic acid, and retinol, both a form of Vitamin A

2.      bee venom

Laser Treatments that Worked:

Only carbon dioxide laser resurfacing was found to work well, because it removes the old dermis – the deeper layer of the skin in three weeks. Other, less powerful laser treatments did not work.

Ingredients that Work only as Injections:

Most ingredients such as hyaluronic acid had to be injected into the deep layer of the skin in order to work, e.g. injections of cross-linked hyaluronic acid worked, but not as an ingredient in a face cream, so don’t bother buying expensive skin creams with this in it!

What else doesn’t work?

U – M  researchers found that even other forms of Vitamin A, such as Vitamin A palmate can’t penetrate the skin, and Vitamin A palmitate and acetate do NOT work either, because this molecule does not penetrate the skin deeply enough.

How to Choose a Face Cream for Wrinkles

Researchers found that prescription retinol  -- retinoic acid in face cream for wrinkles -- works best and that it is the most effective.

• Over the counter face creams with retinol (a form of Vitamin A) also work, but they work much slower.  

You can choose one of these to repair the collagen deep in your skin and to stimulate the growth of new, unblemished, firmer, plumper skin:

          1.  Retinoic acid is a prescription drug used to treat acne and aging effects.

Brand names of prescription retinoic acid are: Retin-A, Aberela, Renova, Aird, Avita, Retacnyl, Refissa, ReTrieve, Atralin, and Stieva – A.

Retinoic acid works well as an anti aging skin cream, but it can be drying and irritating, so it should only be used for short time periods.  Certainly use moisturizing face creams to help soothe your skin, but wait 15 minutes after putting these on.
