Whats The Normal Blood Pressure By Age?

Why might you get a second opinion about whats the normal blood pressure for you?

The official guidelines may not be right for you, and cause unnecessary worry, or over-medication.

Here's how you can gauge your normal blood pressure by age, based on science...

...research findings that can help you determine whether your personal normal blood pressure rates are actually putting you at risk of dying, or not!

Scientists at the Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research, Minneapolis, MN, USA studied the medical records of large numbers of people in order to identify the "danger zone” for high blood pressure.

  • They decided that only if a person's BP rate is associated with an increased risk of death, would it be considered to be "high blood pressure" needing medical treatment.
  • This "danger zone" turned out to be different for various age groups. For older people it was usually a BP reading higher than 140 mm Hg.

This differs from the American Heart Association Guidelines, which consider a much lower reading of 130 mm Hg to be in need of treatment.

Many in the medical community feel that the AHA Guidelines draw the line (where medication is required), too low, resulting in many people being told they need medication, instead of making lifestyle changes.

This is resulting in "over diagnosis" and over medication!

What Is Optimum Blood Pressure?

Find out about high blood pressure and age to avoid over medication

The goal posts for whats normal blood pressure have changed.

By LOWERING the definition of whats the normal blood pressure, the current American Heart Association Guidelines created millions of new “patients.”

These guidelines define what is OPTIMUM blood pressure, to be LESS THAN 130/80.

  • High blood pressure, was, before 2017, defined as 140/90 or higher, but in 2017 it was re-defined as 130/80 or higher.

But there is no medical agreement about these “one size fits all” guidelines.

  • For example, The American Academy of Family Medicine did not endorse these guidelines.

The Academy cites conflict of interest by noticing that the director of the SPRINT trial which the guidelines are largely based on, was also in charge of developing the official guidelines.

The Academy also concluded that there was not enough benefit gained by treating people with a BP between 130/80 to 140/80, with medications.  1

Whats the Normal Blood Pressure for Your Age? Ages 30 to 80?

Fasting high blood pressure dangers can be interpreted differently by age

Here’s what to consider to be able to stay out of the “danger zone,” which will vary according to your age.

For example, in one large study, the definition of high blood pressure was 160 mm Hg, or higher.

Here is what they found:

A high systolic pressure 160 mm Hg or higher (top reading) increased the risk of cardiovascular disease differently for these age groups:

  • 30 to 65 year olds -- had an 1.5 times increased risk
  •  64 to 74 year olds -- had an 1.7  times increased risk
  • 75 and over – had a lesser, an 1.2 times increased risk of heart disease.

A blood pressure reading of 160 mm Hg or higher was most dangerous for 64 – 74 year olds, and the least dangerous for those age 75 and older.

  • Scientists concluded that treatment with prescriptions drugs in older patients is justified only when systolic blood pressure is 160 mm Hg or higher.

Also, they reported that men got more protection from taking BP medications than did women.

And drug treatment prevented stroke more effectively than it prevents coronary events, or heart attacks. 2

High blood pressure risk and age need to be considered together!

Whats the Normal Blood Pressure without Risk of Death?

American Heart Association Guidelines accused of causing over-medication of millions of people

The investigators at the Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research re-defined whats the normal blood pressure to be officially "high" only if it increases your risk of dying.

Here’s what happened when they re-defined normal and abnormal blood pressure based on “increased risk of mortality.”

Here is what they found by age:

  • For people OVER age 50, the mortality rate began to significantly increase if their systolic blood pressure (top reading) was 140 mm Hg or more, regardless of their diastolic BP (lower reading)
  • For individuals LESS than 50 years of age, the situation was reversed; the lower reading, or diastolic BP was the more important predictor of whether they would die or not.

What’s in a definition?

  • These researchers concluded that by this definition, 100 million Americans would NOT be considered to have HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE!!

"Using these data to redefine whats the normal blood pressure -- as one that does not confer an increased mortality risk -- would reduce the number of American adults currently labeled as abnormal by about 100 million." 3

If you are one of these 100 million Americans, you can take a deep breath, and have your medications re-assessed!

These typically were lifestyle issues that can be changed.

Here are the “MODIFYABLE RISK” factors that cause dangerously high BP.

People in the “danger zone” tended to have some or all of these risk factors:

  • low fiber intake
  • lack of physical activity
  • high non-HDL cholesterol
  • abdominal fat or obesity
