Mini Stroke Warning Signs: What are Mini Stroke Symptoms, Warning Signs of a Stroke or the Signs of a Mini Stoke?

Why be on the alert for mini stroke warning signs?

Why is it important to know not only the signs of a stroke but also know the signs of a mini stroke?

Why know mini stroke symptoms?

Because these are in fact warning signs of a stroke, and because the chances of having an actual stroke increases dramatically in the days after mini stroke symptoms!

Even though your doctor will NOT find any damage from mini strokes and even from mini stroke symptoms (TIA trans ischemic attack)  -- not even if your doctor gives you BRAIN SCAN...

Nevertheless, there are now new BRAIN MAPPING techniques that do show that there is BRAIN DAMAGE from a MINI STROKE!

  • Mini strokes in fact do leave “hidden” brain damage, which is not good news!
  • But there's also good news. Here's research about better stroke treatments and prevention, so you don't have to wait for mini stroke warning signs!

Looking out for Mini Stroke Warnings Signs: What are Mini Stroke Symptoms?

Here's mini stroke symptoms:

A mini stroke, or a TIA (transient ischemic attack) is caused by a short blood loss to the brain, and the signs of a mini stroke are:

  • Numbness or tingling
  • Temporary loss of vision
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Weakness on one side of the body

Because the signs of a mini stroke disappear quickly – usually within 24 hours, many people do not take such an episode seriously.

Why take Mini Stroke Warning Signs Seriously?

A mini stroke or TIAs is often a warning sign of a future stroke. Why pay attention?

  • Because after a mini stroke attack, the risk of a serious stroke increases dramatically.
  • The mini stroke gives you a chance to find the cause and to act to prevent the serious damage of a stroke.

While it is known that a mini stroke is a warning sign of a likely future stroke, don't panic, because not every person goes on to have a stroke. But do take preventive action!

Mini-strokes leave ‘hidden’ Brain Damage

Normally, doctors can NOT find any damage from a mini stroke, either through clinical evaluation or with standard imaging (CT or MRI) within 14 to 30 days of a mini stroke.

But new research published in “Stroke,” the journal of the American Heart Association shows that these attacks or mini strokes may not be transient at all.

  • Using a new brain mapping technique, (transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS) researchers were amazed to find changes that show that a mini stroke or TIA is likely not a "transient event" as was previously thought.

The researchers found that mini strokes likely DO create lasting neurological damage to the brain!

  • “A mini stroke causes damage to the brain that lasts much longer than we previously thought it did. In fact, we are not sure if the brain ever recovers,” says the lead author of the study, Jodi Edwards, PhD and that:

“We know now that people may look and feel fine, and even standard imaging says they are fine, but they are NOT!” (School of Population and Public Health, UBC)

  • Researchers found that the brain cells on the affected side of the brain did show changes – that yes, it was in fact harder for neurons to react, in comparison to the undamaged side of the brain, and as compared to a group of people with healthy brains!

Five Warning Signs of a Stroke:

If you experience any of these 5 signs, call 911 or your local medical emergency number immediately:

  • WEAKNESS: Sudden weakness, numbness, or tingling in the face, arm or leg
  • TROUBLE SPEAKING: Sudden temporary loss of speech or trouble understanding speech
  • VISION PROBLEMS: Sudden loss of vision, particularly in one eye, or double vision
  • HEADACHE: sudden severe and unusual headache
  • DIZZINESS Sudden loss of balance, especially with any of the abouve signs

Mini stroke warning signs are more “transient” and usually disappear within 24 hour.

What are Heart Attack Warning Signs?

Just so you know the difference, here's heart attack symptoms:

Warning signs of a mini stroke or a heart attack can be mild or severe. If you, or someone you know is having any of these signs, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

PAIN:

• Sudden discomfort or pain that does not go away with rest

• Pain that may be in the chest, neck, jaw, shoulder, arms or back

• Pain that may feel like burning, squeezing, heaviness, tightness or pressure

• In women, pain may be more vague

SHORTNESS OF BREATH:

• Difficulty breathing

NAUSEA

• Indigestion

• Vomiting

SWEATING

• Cool, clammy skin

FEAR:

• Anxiety

• Denial

Best Stroke Treatment for Stroke Recovery?

Several new studies provide simple but effective ways to improve stroke recovery.

So, if you want to minimize you Coumadin use and avoid eventual dangerous warfarin side effects, here's what to do after having had a stroke:

  • Spinach and Blueberries Surprise Scientists for Better Stroke Treatment!

A study published in the journal Experimental Neurology shows how eating lots of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can limit brain damage from stroke and other neurological disorders.

USF/VA neuroscientist Paula Bickford, PhD, and colleagues, found when they fed rats a "preventative" diet that is enriched with blueberries, spinach or an algae known as the phytoplankton spirulina, they had had less brain cell loss, and they also recovered their movement better after they had a stroke.

So eat your greens everyone!! For better stroke treatments after, but also to avoid having to watch for mini stroke warning signs!

These finding affirm earlier USF/VA research showing that diets enriched with blueberries, spinach or spirulina reversed normal age-related declines in memory and learning in old rats.

• Researchers were amazed at the extent of neuro protection that antioxidant-rich diets provide.

And there's more good news:

Dr. Bickford, a researcher at the USF Center for Aging and Brain Repair reported that the size of the stroke was 50 to 75 percent less in rats treated with diets supplemented with blueberries, spinach or spirulina before the stroke.

They think that antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents in these fruits and vegetables reduce the nerve cell injury and death triggered by a stroke.

They concluded that ongoing treatment with blueberry, spinach, or spirulina reduces cell death (ischemia/reperfusion-induced apoptosis) and cell death due to stroke. (cerebral infarction).

So start making smoothies and eat your spinach!

This is an easy, readily available, inexpensive and safe way to benefit stroke patients, according to the researchers – without dangerous Coumadin side effects.

  • Just make sure you have your doctor monitor your INR carefully when you add greens such as spinach if taking warfarin or Coumadin!

Avoid having mini stroke warning signs by being pro-active!

Mini stroke Warning Signs Prevention

We hope you have found our research postings about mini stroke warning signs helpful.

  • Why not use proven supplements and foods that scientists say work just as well as heart meds do in preventing a heart attack stroke.

Not only will you regain your health and not have to worry about signs of a mini stroke -- and you will feel better and avoid the real dangers of these medications!
