Pain of Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue: Medical Research Gives New Hope for Energy Illnesses

Chronic muscle pain and fatigue is becoming less of a mystery and closer to a cure.

Many people are reporting their pain gone because of new natural medical discoveries, even for “treatment resistant” fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFS.

Medical research is putting new light on chronic energy illnesses, offering new hope for recovery:

Immune Irregularity Discovered

Researchers in Britain have found abnormalities in the white blood cells, or in the immune system of people with fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFS.

A team at St George’s University of London has demonstrated a specific immune system irregularity which helps to explain why CFS often begins with a flu-like illness which never goes away.

Investigator Jonathon Kerr said that scientists will now be able to develop a blood test for CFS. (Journal of Clinical Pathology, Aug. 2005.)

Can Immune Challenges Cause Pain & Fatigue?

Dr. Gustavo Bounous pioneered ground-breaking research for re-building the immune of severely immune challenged individuals, at McGill University in Montreal. He explains how an immune challenge can cause the muscle pain called fibromyalgia:

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) TYPICALLY FOLLOWS AN INFECTION.

Researchers typically find "Abnormalities of both humoral and cellular IMMUNITY in a substantial proportion of patients with CFS," says Dr. Bounous, and that because the immune system is THE most important system for our survival, it takes top priority, and can, over the long run, deprive the skeletal muscles of what they need for normal aerobic metabolism.

This results in fatigue and eventually in pain, or myalgia.

What are Sore Muscles Deprived Of?

According to Dr. Bounous, a career investigator for the Canadian Government, the muscles are deprived of glutathione, or GSH:

“Glutathione is the food for the immune. As an antioxidant, glutathione is essential for allowing the lymphocyte (immune cell) to express its full potential. (without being hampered by oxiradical accumulation.)”

Therefore, a prolonged challenge to the immune, (the immuneocytes) can lead to cellular glutathione (GSH) depletion.

And, because glutathione is also essential to aerobic muscular contraction, an undesirable competition for glutathione between the immune and muscular systems may develop.

Since skeletal muscles need glutathione to sustain a normal aerobic metabolism, a lack results in fatigue and eventually myalgia, or the pain experienced in fibromyalgia.

It turns out that glutathione is protective of the energy centers of the cells!!

It does this by reducing the damage done to them by free radicals.

This is especially important for the muscles with fibromyalgia, CFS -- because it is an important protector of energy metabolism (mitochondrial function) during periods of oxidative stress.

Marilyn with Fibromyalgia: I have reclaimed my life!

"Three years ago, I was diagnosed by my medical doctor as having fibromyalgia.

I was in a car accident and came away from it with only a little scratch----or so I thought. I have had a chronic sore throat for years, which becomes bronchitis under stress.

At this time I was looking after grandchildren - 3 & 5 years old for 4 days a week. After this accident, I developed aches and pains that I couldn't figure out.

Upon awaking, I felt exhausted, my muscles ached and were stiff. I felt as though I had a very bad case of flu, and a Mack truck had run over me as well. The soles of my feet were so painful I could hardly walk.

Along with poor sleep, I suffered chronic fatigue, depression and anxiety. I could not sit or stand for extended periods of time, so I had to cut back on my singing in the choirs and was petrified when I got a call to go on jury duty. My doctor wanted to treat me with drugs. Because I was searching for alternatives, I found a good naturopath, and I went on a regimen of nutritional supplements and mild exercise .

Then I read about Dr. Gutman and glutathione. It made sense to take the nutritional pre-cursors for my body to make glutathione.

I started using a nutraceutical to improve my glutathione consistently in August.

By November, I was getting a good night's sleep and the chronic fatigue was gone. I have learned to pace my activities, not avoid them. I am now exercising regularly and know that in regaining my energy!

I have reclaimed my life!

I recommend improving your glutathione NATURALLY if you want to be proactive about your health!"

Sincerely, Marilyn M.

Why NOT just Take a Pill?

Raising glutathione levels can dramatically affect the devastating fatigue experienced with these illnesses!

These findings give new hope for many of the treatment-resistant aspects of fibromyalgia and CFS.

• Unfortunately, improving glutathione can't be done by just taking a pill, and neither is the drug NAC good for the long term.

• You are best to provide the nutritional pre-cursors as "food for the immune."

• This is best done with a nutraceutical that's been clinically proven to raise glutathione levels and to "feed the immune."

New Insight Into Extreme Fatigue

Dr Paul Cheney, who coined the term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), found that FM - CFS patients were ending up quite ill in the hospital while attempting perfectly good detox programs that worked for a lot of other people.

Pursuing this anomaly, he discovered that these patients were experiencing a toxic overload because their body’s own natural detoxification system – the glutathione mechanism – was compromised.

But, Prescribing Pills Did Not Work...

Dr. Cheney found this detoxification defect to exist not only in the liver, but also in individual cells, making them susceptible to microbial invasion, for example, candida.

However, when he prescribed glutathione pills, glutathione enhancing drugs such as NAC, and even intravenous glutathione, these produced only a small benefit.

Eventually, Dr. Cheney’s patients did notice a big difference when they added dietary supplements recommended by Dr. Bounous to provide proper "food for the immune" and improving glutathione.

New Hope For Recovery: Fibromyalgia, CFS

Dr. Jimmy Gutman is a glutathione expert. He says that key treatment-resistant aspects of FM - CFS can often be addressed when the body’s own immune and protective detoxification system are enhanced -- by supplying glutathione precursors.

There are many reports from individuals who have successfully recovered through raising their glutathione levels – those with fibromyalgia, CFS, and also people with Multiple Sclerosis, MS and Lyme’s disease have recovered their energy and gotten amazing pain relief.

Once the missing link for making glutathione is provided through pre-cursors, the cell’s own ability to mount a defense against a wide range of viruses and bacteria is re-enforced -- so that people with fibromyalgia can recover from pain and fatigue.

Don't Give Up!

The sleep disturbances, 'fibro fog' and pain of fibromyalgia "can be assisted towards recovery by supporting homeostatic mechanisms," says Dr. Leon Chaitow:

1) Remove as many factors as possible which are negatively impacting on the body/mind through stress reduction, adequate wholesome diet, rest and exercise, elimination of infectious yeasts / viruses / bacteria / parasites and replenish deficiencies with supplements, whether nutritional or hormonal.

2) Modulate the Immune and general repair functions and develop increased hardiness by use of suitable constitutional (i.e. non-specific) methods including counselling, general bodywork, detoxification, deep relaxation.
