Oprah Winfrey Says: Set a Goal
Oprah set a goal to lose 50 pounds before she turned 50, and she did. She let the whole world know that, for instance, she does not eat after 7:30 p.m., and setting limits like that works well for her. Her favorite snacks? She now snacks on sugar-free fudge pops, or half a sliced apple with an ounce of thinly sliced parmesan cheese – instead of being into the potato chips like she used to be! • Oprah’s winning strategy: set a goal and stick to it, and of course, let everyone know about it!

Steven Hawks: Give In to M&M’s and Ice Cream Bars "Diets"
After many unsuccessful attempts at weight loss through diets, Steven Hawks gave in to his cravings, and filled up his shopping cart with ice cream bars, M&M’s and toffee covered almonds. He then lost the 50 lbs he had gained back after counting calories. How?The Brigham Young University health science professor had a problem, as reported by Brock Vergakis of Associated Press. He did not think that a fat person like himself could get a job teaching students how to be healthy. And even though he could count calories to get the job he did want, the pounds would soon come back. Being a “restrained eater” and dieting just was not working. Hawks eventually made a choice to stop counting calories, but instead to pay attention to hunger pangs. He then ate whatever he wanted, but he had an agreement with himself to stop eating when he was not hungry. He became an “intuitive eater” by eating only he was hungry, and stopping when he was full. He paid more attention to hunger pangs, and ate whatever he wanted. The payoff for Steven was that he has nowhere near the cravings he had as a “restrained eater.” He stopped feeling guilty about eating potato chips, but also stopped eating when he wasn’t hungry. Now he is as likely to eat broccoli, and eats a quite healthy diet in all. The trade-off has been to not eat for emotional reasons – chocolates because he’s feeling blue, or a big plate of nachos because everybody else at the table is eating. • The winning strategy: INTUITIVE EATING based on tuning into hunger pangs, not calories. And having on hand an over-abundance of what is taboo helped Steven to lose his desire to gorge.
Cathy S., California: Keeping Up With My Kids
One day, Cathy was in the park with her 9-month old son, and she saw a group of kids playing ball. That is when it hit her that if she kept gaining weight she would not be able to keep up with her son. Just walking to the park with her son in the stroller got her out of breath in just five minutes. She realized how out of shape she was, and committed to walking every day. She stocked her kitchen with fruits and vegetables because she knew that if she did not bring home high fat foods she would not be tempted to eat them. She began cooking meals instead of eating out. She did not always stick to her new diet, as on Sundays she allowed herself a “free” day to eat whatever she wanted. Within a year she had lost 55 pounds. • Winning strategy: feeling good. What got Cathy to stick with it was that “I felt alive and full of energy each time I walked more and began jogging, and that motivated me to stick with it.”
Bonnie G., New York: Putting Myself First
When her brother married, Bonnie wore a beautiful dress she thought looked good on her. But when she saw photos, her heart sank and thought, “I cannot possibly be that wide.” She went to bed and cried. But it was not crying in a self-pitying way – she was crying for strength to exercise and lose weight and never look back. She began by digging out her parents’ exercise bike and peddling in her bedroom. She wondered, “How long will it take before I collapse, and why do they make these seats so damm small?” She lasted three minutes the first day, but soon added dancing, sit-ups, jumping jacks and running on the spot to her workout. She also cut out junk food, started drinking lots of water and snacked on fruit and veggies. Bonnie eventually lost 125 pounds, and has even completed a 5 mile run. She is no longer embarrassed to take her kids to swimming lessons and struts her stuff in her bathing suit. Bonnie continues to hop on her treadmill and runs to trash TV, and says “American Idol and Entertainment Tonight really keep me going.” • Winning strategy: “Making myself a priority.” So many people say they have no time for fitness because they do not make themselves a priority.
Margaret S., Washington: Stop Crying, Take Control
When Margaret and her husband applied for life insurance, the 34-year old stepped on the scales and weighed in at 304 pounds. She cried as she left the office, but did not do anything. When her doctor diagnosed her with sleep apnea and suggested she lose weight for her health, she says that “I was finally ready to do something about my predicament other than to cry.”For the first two months she switched pop for water, swore off junk food and cut her portions in half, while adding more fruit and veggies to her diet. After losing 120 pounds she is down from a size 26 to a size 14 and she is still slimming. She now walks her dog for an hour before work, and strength trains 2 times a week, saying that “I feel off-kilter if I don’t exercise in the mornings now.” • Winning strategy: Taking control. “There is nothing like knowing I am able to control how I use my body and what I put into it.”
Sheila P., New Jersey: A New Way of Life
Sheila had consistently been overweight during her teenage years, and had been on no end of diets and weight loss plans to lose the pounds. “I tried every fad diet out there, she says. “I went on juice fasts, ate fat-free foods, and even tried the blood-type diet. Even walking on the treadmill every day did not do it for me.”Then one day, she was at the salon, and the aesthetician commented that she would look so much prettier if she lost weight. That cemented her resolve to change. This time she did not go on another diet. She began to learn about foods and read the labels. She was shocked at the amount of sugar and artificial ingredients she had been eating. She used to hate cooking, but now it became a fun challenge to find ways to prepare healthful dishes. She found a total-body strength-training program that helped build lean muscle in the places she lost fat. When she reached her weight loss goal of 30 pounds, she continued with Pilates, walking and biking, and became more determined than ever to eat right rather than diet. • Winning strategy: “Not a fad diet but a new way of life, and a new me”
