Child obesity is still increasing, but there is some good news for parents, because researchers have found that by making some very small changes you can begin to push back against childhood obesity.The “small changes” that got results were: • Consuming one less soda or candy bar a day. • Walking an extra 2,000 steps every day. These small changes can help prevent excessive weight gain in children, and begin to turn the tide on child obesity, according to researchers. This is really good news for families, says Dr. James O. Hill, the investigator, because he found that “With some very small changes you can begin to push back against childhood obesity.” His findings were presented during the 2006 Pediatric Academic Societies meeting in San Francisco. Dr Hill’s study followed 216 families, all of which had at least one overweight or obese child, aged 7 to 14 years, were assigned to the on-the-move program. By the end of the six-month study, children had decreased their average body mass index — a measure of weight that takes height into consideration.
