Asthma and Allergies Caused by Immune Cells Say Scientists, Offering New Treatments

People with asthma and allergies may eventually breathe easier because of new medical findings about the cause of inflammation.

There are also new discoveries about nutrients that regulate the immune, making it possible to stop inflammation and swelling before it starts.

New Immune Cell Key

US Scientists have discovered an immune cell they say could lead to new treatment for these diseases.

"We think this has finally elucidated some mechanisms for autoimmune disease and asthma," says Dr Chen Dong.

The researchers, whose findings were released in the journal Nature and Immunology, believe the new kind of cell is a key to inflamed airways and diseases where the body’s immune system runs amok.

Finally, The Cause of Inflammation -- Allergies and the Lungs

Asthma and allergies are “two sides of the same coin” in that they are both immune responses. Both are caused by overproduction of otherwise important immune molecules.

Evidence had been building that people who produce too much of a protein called interleukin 17 (IL-17) can suffer runaway inflammation in a range of body tissues.

But no one knew what made the IL-17 that caused the trouble. The US team found a new population of T cells, or white blood cells, that churn out interleukin 17.

“Prior to this breakthrough,” says lead investigator Chen Dong, PhD, at the Department of Immunology at the University of Texas., “we knew that there was an excess of a protein called IL-17 in inflamed tissues and lungs, but we did not understand where it came from.”

Culprit: The Immune Gone Awry

Scientists are excited about finding this new type of “helper cell,” or T cell which they now call inflammatory TH cells that is the culprit for initiating chronic inflammation and autoimmunity in a variety of body tissues.

The investigators say they are a lot closer to understanding asthma and allergies and the swollen lungs and the inflammatory response that causes them, hoping that this discovery will lead them to be able to effectively treat these diseases – if not stop them before they start.

New Basis for Intervention

Scientists have also discovered that there are key nutrients that “feed” and regulate the immune and thereby prevent inflammation.

Vitamin D is being found to play an important part in regulating the immune, and the other is a molecule made by the body called glutathione.

“We speculate that Vitamin D may promote the process of renewal and repair in the lungs” reported Dr. Peter Black at the University of Auckland. He used data collected in the US to determine that “people with a lot of vitamin D circulating in their blood had significantly better lung function than those with lower concentrations.

Dr. Black thinks that vitamin D plays a role in promoting renewal and the repair of the lungs from damage due to inhaling toxins and noxious gasses.

New Findings About the Immune, Allergies and the Lungs

“It has long been thought that if someone has low levels of glutathione and glutathione peroxidase, this plays a role in the onset and progression of asthma,” says Dr. Gutman, a glutathione expert.

Low glutathione has been recognized in the medical literature as a factor in lung and other diseases, but it was not known how to raise the body’s own glutathione levels safely and without pharmaceuticals, through nutrition.

The discovery of a protein that raises glutathione is now allowing people with lung problems and allergies to be pro-active and lessen their symptoms.

Why is that? Because glutathione “feeds” and “modulates” the immune. The protein discovered by Dr. Bounous at Mc Gill University, has been shown in clinical trials to increase glutathione in immune cells by 30%.

This strengthens and "modulates" the immune response so it does not over react. (Taking a glutathione pill does not work)

Balancing the Immune Response for the Lungs and Allergies

How can glutathione help when the immune goes "over the top?"

Improved glutathione levels “modulate” the immune response, so that it is less likely to go awry and cause inflammation, thereby decreasing or preventing attacks.

What Are People Saying?

• Scott’s eleven-year-old daughter had been very asthmatic and, although she had been to three different doctors, she was getting very little relief.

After ten days of taking a natural supplement that raises glutathione, his daughter’s symptoms had virtually disappeared. He was surprised and delighted, to say the least.

And because he was not sure, he stopped giving his daughter the supplement. But after a week all of her symptoms returned – the coughing, the wheezing, and the shortness of breath. When he put her back on the protein, she was back to her healthy self within three days.

• “I have been asthmatic for approximately thirty-three years,” says Ed Peterson who lives on the prairies, “and winter time is always worst time. But since I took cysteine-rich protein to raise my glutathione, I am virtually asthma free!”

• Mary Gainer began to add to her diet a supplement that raises glutathione because of various health concerns. Then one day she realized that she had not used her asthma inhaler for a whole year, and that was a miracle!

Stopping Inflammation

Because inflammatory lung problems and allergies are dormant until activated by a stimulus, treatment has up to now focused on alleviating attacks when they occur.

But now, scientists like Dr. Dong are hopeful that these new findings will enable them to find ways to stop chronic inflammatory disease from developing in the first place!

Vitamin D is also important as a supplement. Vitamin D has recently been found to play a much more important role than we thought, and it is now believed to help regulate the immune system, thereby improving lung function.
