Gum Disease: Research Links Both Heart Disease and Cancer to Gum Disease

• Researchers had already found gum disease to be linked to heart disease.

• Now, a strong link has also been found between gum disease and cancer.

• Low levels of an antioxidant is implicated in all three.

HEART DISEASE

• Researchers at Columbia University found that people with high levels of bacteria linked to periodontal disease had thicker carotid arteries.

• Periodontal disease has been lined to increased risk of heart disease, heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and pre-term low birth weight in babies.

• Researcher Moise Desvarieux, MD PhD suspect that it is possible that in someone with periodontal disease the mouth’s pesky bacteria travel through the bloodstream and prompt inflammation that clogs arteries.

PANCREATIC CANCER:

• Harvard researchers have linked common gum disease to a 63% increased risk of pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the USA.

• Low-key inflammation may also be the culprit here, as the Harvard researchers conclude that the role of inflammation from periodontal disease in pancreatic cancer needs further investigation.

Link Found Between Periodontal Disease and Pancreatic Cancer

What’s the Connection?

• People with gum disease have been found to have low levels of key antioxidant called glutathione that is likely to offer protection, say researchers at the School of Dentistry at the University of Birmingham.

• When these researchers looked closely at saliva samples, they found that patients with severe periodontal disease had very low levels of glutathione. Conversely, patients with healthy gums had much higher levels of this antioxidant glutathione.

• Glutathione is increasingly being recognized as an indicator of cardiac health.

• The New Eng Journal of Medicine recently presented a large trial that looked at glutathione as a predictor of risk, and it concluded that that raising glutathione may prevent a future heart attack. This group of AtheroGene Investigators concluded that, “it appears that the higher the level of your glutathione, the less likely you are to get cardiovascular disease.”

• The American Heart Association journal Stroke (Sept 2004) reported that glutathione levels were significantly lower in people that have cardiovascular disease than in people who don’t.

• Researchers found that higher levels of plasma glutathione (GSH) are associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, particularly cerebral small vessel disease.

Low Antioxidant Also Linked To Cancer

• Low levels of the antioxidant glutathione have also been linked to various cancers, including pancreatic cancer.

• How? When researchers found that eating a bioactive protein prevented as well as resolved cancers and tumors, it took many years of research at one of the world’s top Medical Schools to figure out why.

• Why? They had found that this protein was raising glutathione levels, thereby providing protection from cancer.

Nutrition with Cancer Treatment: New Research for Better Survival

Preventing Gum Disease, Heart Disease and Cancer

• Oral hygiene is not always at fault for gum problems.

• Researchers are not certain yet, whether low levels of the antioxidant glutathione is a cause of both gum and heart disease or whether it is simply a sign that the body is using up its reserves of glutathione in fighting back.

• In either case, by raising you glutathione levels, you are better protected, especially when both cancer and heart disease have been implicated.

Glutathione: Antioxidant, Detoxifier and Immune Enhancer Low Glutathione As Predictor Of Heart Disease

Why You Can't Just "Take a Pill"

• Unfortunately, you cannot eat glutathione to raise it. Glutathione expert Dr. J Gutman says that is like eating brains to try to get smart.

• Instead, you have to take its dietary precursors, especially cysteine.

• Research at Mc Gill University has demonstrated that the most effective way to raise the body’s glutathione levels is through nutrition and nutritional supplements.

Bad Breath?

Most of the time we can't tell that we have bad breath, and we depend on others to tip us off!

STOPPING Bad Breath and Gum Disease!

Research suggests that toothpastes and other oral hygiene products fortified with proteins such as lactoferrin offer superior protection for oral health.

Lactoferrin’s anti-microbial properties have been found to provide an excellent defense against invading microorganisms in the mouth. Lactoferrin is important in oral hygiene because it can prevent the adhesion and growth of bacteria on your gums. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Improving oral hygiene can prevent or improve gingivitis, a gum infection that makes gums become inflamed, swollen and bleed. Gum disease starts when plaque forms on teeth and bacteria in plaque lead to chronic inflammation of the gum line.

Worried That You Might Have Bad Breath?

Preventing Gum Disease With Lactorferrin Formula

WARNING: The Ingredients in Most Commercial Toothpastes and Mouthwashes Can Actually Facilitate Bad Breath!

A formula fortified with Lactoferrin is ideal for effectively reducing bacteria in gum tissue and continuing to work even after rinsing.

Lactoferrin is not a household word, but you should know that it is a protein that is a natural component of many body fluids such as tears, blood, milk, and saliva.

Such a formula can also prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Look also for calcium-based, low-abrasion formulas for extra whitening to clean and whiten teeth while promoting healthy gums.

Electric Tooth Brushes and Gum Disease

University of Southern California School of Dentistry conducted The Cochrane systematic review using international standards to examine more than 30 years of published studies.

Only one type of electric toothbrush, the rotating oscillating toothbrush, consistently demonstrated a statistically significant benefit over manual toothbrushes for preventing periodontal disease. The majority of studies did not meet the standards for inclusion, so that most comparisons remain hazy.

Researchers in Norway concluded that professional advice and instruction and re-instruction seem more important in order to obtain good plaque control than the choice of toothbrush in subjects with periodontal disease.

Japanese researchers reported that that twin-motor sonic toothbrushes TST are more efficacious than conventional sonic (CST) and electric (CET) toothbrushes in terms of plaque removal efficacy, e.g. removal of plaque from molars, in particular, at approximal areas in the lingual aspect of the mandible.

They thought that this could possibly due to new functions such as floating bristles and twin magnetic motors, which produce sonic vibration.

For Clinical Trials Comparing Specific Brands: The National Library of Science Studies do show both high-end rotary and sonic to be able to make an improvement in the oral health of people with gum disease. One study, (Robinson et all) done over a 6 month time period, found that both the electric and sonic toothbrushes produced a significant reduction in the amount of dental plaque on the surfaces of the participants teeth.

The overall health of their teeth improved, (e.g. reduction of gingival inflammation and probing depth scores) but there was a statistically greater oral health improvement in those who had used the sonic toothbrushes because they provided better cleaning in those areas where the teeth touch.
